AFFETTI (affections) arises from the desire to keep alive the memory of the past expressed by a group of citizens of the mountain village of Valdieri on the occasion of the replacement of the faded and damages gravestones of the Memorial of the Fallen of the First and Second World War inaugurated in 1967. The work conceived by Stefano Boccalini consists of a fifteen-meter wall of Carrara white marble, which shows in alphabetical order the names and dates of birth of the fallen sculpted in high relief, without distinction between military and civilian victims. The choice to emphasize the relevance of the names responds to the request of the patrons, to whom we owe the research that has amended errors and omissions, with the aim to make of them the most important visual element of the work. As time passes, instead of making them fade away, the atmospheric agents will contribute to render the names more visible as dust will settle on them. The symbolic meaning of the work and its reference to an idea of an active and vibrant community is conveyed by the letters of the word AFFETTI realized in form of cultivable flowerbeds.
