The context

The Lycée Professionnel Privé La Cabucelle includes a professional section concentrating on the Light signage trades. The section's teachers, wishing to expand their students' technical training with artistic practice, commissioned Isabelle Rouquette to create a light sculpture.

The commission

The artist proposed a project consisting of a character made of animated neon lights : three sections of five meters in height, featuring the character in three different positions, lighting-up one after the other, creating the impression of movement. For the students, it was their first completed professional project. The work was placed on the roof of another technical high school belonging to the Trade-training association, the Saint-Henri pofessional private high school. In this way, it highlights the location of the school building, located in a so-called difficult neighborhood at the entrance to the city of Marseille, and becomes a landmark for the users of the north coastal highway.

Isabelle Rouquette

Isabelle Rouquette was born in 1965 in Nogent sur Marne and graduate from the Beaux-Arts school in Nîmes in 1990. She lives and works in Belgium. Rouquette uses a variety of luminous materials, such as neon lights and fluorescent pigments. Her public works are often immaterials : her current project is the façade of a building completely covered in phosphorescent paint.
